Hi Kate,

I would definitely go with the Powerbook if I was you. I was contemplating almost the exact same options a few months ago but in the end, the Powerbook won out and I have never regretted buying it since. I got a 15" Al PB with the backlit keyboard, 80 Gig hard drive and Superdrive. I did not add any RAM, although I may down the road. I think you would appreciate the extra processor drive for iMovie and iDVD, although it is not absolutely essential.

The DVD burner has been a great asset. Not only can I assist a local film production company with their film clips but I can also burn back up data DVD's, create DVD's for friends, and watch movies. For iMovie and iDVD it is great. I also have Final Cut Express.

The iBook is a great value but I have to say that I think you will find the Powerbook a much better investment over the long run.

Good luck with your decision,

Amber

I am contemplating a purchase of a new laptop to replace my G3 firewire (Pismo). I would like a DVD burner on it. I am looking at:

--14" ibook (1.2 Ghz, 256 MB DDR266 RAM, Bluetooth, SuperDrive, 512 L2 cache, 60 GB HD, Radeon 9200, 32 MB Video memory, airport extreme (note that I have customized what this comes with)

--15" PowerBook (1.5 Ghz, 512 MB DDR333 RAM, Bluetooth, SuperDrive, 512 L2 cache, 80 GB HD, Radeon 9700, 64 MB Video memory, airport extreme, FW 400 & 800

With the ibook I know I would need to upgrade memory. How important is the faster RAM, the extra video memory, the improved video card, and the bump in processor speed for working with iMovie and iDVD? The price difference is pretty dramatic-- like $500-600!

Any advice would be appreciated!

Kate
