Thanks for the recommendation about the O'Reilly OS X for unix geeks book. I will get it the next time I order from Bookpool (my favorite source for technical books).
In case anyone one is intersted, I was able to solve my WLAN problem. When I originally set up my access point, I created a list of MAC Addresses, and the access point wouldn't let any device not in that list join the network. also I had to enter my passphrase (a date) in quotes.
Thanks much.

Also, while on the subject, what are the best books that explain how to use OS X for a person who is returning to the Mac after about 8 years of windows/unix use?
Oreilly has a book "OSX for Unix Geeks" <http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/mpantherunix/>, and the standard recommended text "OS X Panther, the missing manual"
