As a side note, you might want to be concerned about security using 
an open network in places like malls, coffee shops, outside benches 
etc. There is at least the potential for anyone nearby picking up 
data from your connection.

If, however, all you want to do is "surf the web" then you might not 
have anything worth hijacking. Email is another story though, 
assuming you don't use a SSL email account. You will be exposing not 
only your email messages, but also your password and account.

Speaking of using a hotspot for email, it's been my experience that 
most of these locations will allow you to retrieve your email, but 
not send any. It's the same situation as an ISP that won't allow 
relaying to protect against SPAMers.

Just as couple of things to keep in mind when exploring hotspots.
