I have just bought a Wallstreet (PDQ) 300MHz with 192MB of RAM

the progress bar) the backlight switches off and cannot be revived

what I'm doing.

I had this phenomena on a 233MHz Wallstreet so I know (?) it's
not the PowerBook.

How do I go about solving this so that I can install OS X ?

I've had this happen while running OS X. The solution for me is to restart in OS 9, put the laptop to sleep, wake it up then restart into OS X.
