I also had this happen. I was able to get around it by:

Erase the hard drive-twice.
Repartition if needed for the 8 GB exception. (Unnecessary on a HD with less than or equal to 8 GB)
Run Disk Repair on the newly erased HD. (You would be surprised)
Install OS X on the newly erased HD.
(Install OS X BEFORE installing anything else like OS 9.)

This has worked like a charm.
Also be alert that certain types of RAM won't work. OS X on a WS PB is very very picky about the RAM.

Good Luck,
Byron

I have just bought a Wallstreet (PDQ) 300MHz with 192MB of RAM
which I am now attempting to install OS X.2 onto, however, when
it has booted of the CD, as soon as the OS X screen appears (with
the progress bar) the backlight switches off and cannot be revived
with key-presses or touchpad-movements, basically I cannot see
what I'm doing.

I had this phenomena on a 233MHz Wallstreet so I know (?) it's
not the PowerBook.

How do I go about solving this so that I can install OS X ?
