** only a customer... newegg has been excellent and shipped in less than 24hrs.

Wanted to share my positive experience regarding the DVD burner upgrade to my Pismo
[500, 40gb 5400, 1gb, Airport, 10.3.5].

I purchased the 'Panasonic' (actually shows as a Matshita in ASP) UJ-825-B from
newegg.com at the low price of $143. It is: slot loading, black, 2.4X DVD+R, 2.4X
DVD+RW, 4X DVD-R, 2X DVD-RW, 2X DVD-RAM, 16X CD-R, 8X CD-RW.

After installing it in the exp. bay, I found burning unsupported in 10.2.8 but DVD
viewing, CD reading was fine. I tried to find a simple patchburn hack or a modified
burn-plugin file from someone else with no avail. I subsequently upgraded to Panther,
patched it to 10.3.5 and still no burn support. I used Patchburn II (for Panther) and,
with a reboot, all burn features of the OS were now supported (finder burning, iTunes,
etc.). All is well - now I need to get iDVD...

Pros - Cheap, slot loading, DVD burning, boots to CD, quieter than stock DVD.
Cons - Bezel doesn't match.

Thinking back to 1996 when I shelled out $330 for a 5.25" 4x scsi CD-ROM, life seems
pretty freakin' good nowadays. I may move this drive into my Cube and buy the slot
loading Combo drive for the Pismo (also sold at newegg for $72 - a steal!).

Happy to answer any questions regarding this drive or the Lite-On LSC-2082K tray
loading Combo drive (which I used for several months with complete success before it
moved on to another machine).
