i'm a recent switch so forgive me if i sound erally clueless. i've

says 'self assigned IP address unable to connect"... i googled this
problem and foudn:

<snip>
What you CAN do with the 169.254.x.x IP address:
ping it. If you get a response, it proves the network adapter is
working (in it's hardware.) If you can't ping it, try pinging
127.0.0.1, if you can't ping 127.0.0.1 then reset the tcp/ip stack and
all should be fine.

By the way, a 0.0.0.0 IP address is the same deal, except it has
0.0.0.0 until it times out and determines that it can't find a DHCP
server - within 3 minutes it will have a 169.254.x.x IP address. You
can also check out the windows xp fix for the IP 0.0.0.0

can anyone explani this to me in plain english? i erally know nothing
about wifi connections... this has been my problem no matter where i
attempt it... i don't have a base station in my apt yet, but at my
friend's apt or the many free wifi areas in manhattan i can't get a
connection, only the error message... at my friend's apt, he runs
windows computers that auto detect the network and connect with no
problem, he gave me the password but when i entered it into the
airport connection manager it said that it was incorrect! he was
clueless also about any more problem solving techniques and we both
had no idea what to do... i can't ask him to reset his router, or ask
the providers of free wifi to reset their router either, which was a
suggestion i foudn on many mssg boards... even at home, i dont want to
bother getting an airport base station until i know that its not oign
to be $100 and more frustration to try to get a damn connection
without wires. i've made sure the settings are exactly as recommended
in setup (autodetect dhcp, etc) but nothing works!!! reaching the end
of my rope.... help!!!

For what's it worth:

I have an Airport Base Station (dual ethernet), also known as "Snow". I've got my Pismo loaded with an Airport Card and have been surfing the web at home wirelessly for a long time with no problems. Just a few weeks ago, I went to my friends apartment and my Airport Card detected a network but I experienced the exact problems you have experienced with every attempt. The self-assigned IP address was what I thought to be simply an encrypted network that I could not connect to; but later found out that was not the case.

There are two options: Go to eBay and pick up a Snow base station as with the Base station, you can reset your card along with the station and should be able to go wireless with no problems. Which brings up another point; have you have tested your Mac with a wired connection already? Have you checked Software Update to make sure all of your Airport software is up to date?

The next option is to locate a local Apple Store. I suggest the Apple Store only because these are wi-fi hotspots that have a guaranteed Airport based network. Try connecting there, and if the same problem occurs, see if one of the "Mac Geniuses" can figure it out. (If you've never been in an Apple store, that's what they're called).

I have been searching on the net and talking to colleagues to get to the bottom of this since, and have found that the mentioned options for now are the best bet. You can also remove your card, use your Mac online via a cable to make sure everything is working, then shutdown, pop the card back in, and with a local wireless network that does not require encryption, try surfing. In my experience with the wireless network, rebooting the computer and of course the base station have almost always solved problems.

So to sum up my little book here. . .if there's no Apple Store close by, buy a base station. This will be money well spent, and should reset your card. (Be sure to reset the base station once you hook it up.) All the info on this is downloadable at Apple's website.

Hope this helps at least a little,

Zoltan
