What this means, most likely, is that you didn't enter the correct WEP key (or Password, as Airport calls it) to get an IP address from the wireless router.


Another possibility is that the router is restricted to certain specific wireless cards, and that you have to add your cards Ethernet address to the router, but this really depends on the wireless router setup.

A 'self-assigned' IP address is what the Mac OS does if it cannot successfully get an IP address from any other source, and is merely a placeholder address, so something is there.

(In a Rendezvous environment, it does mean something, but I doubt that's the case here)
