Hi Larry,
I personally know of a Mac-using graphics business
that keeps a 9600 PowerMac just for clients who use
older fonts. 
Try searching for solutions, e.g. on Mac-related NGs
via //google.groups.com or some other search engine
using suitable key words, of course. I remember
getting some good insights. It's a nasty problem.
