Hi -- I'm new to this list but a long time LowEndMac reader.

My Wallstreet "Road Apple" 12" has begun to suddenly shut down by itself. I use MacOS9.2.2 and I first saw this while workin in InDesign 1.5. A reboot works fine, till it soon happens again. When it first happened I was using an external monitor, though I don't know if that had any bearing on this. However the failur seems to happen when the 'book is under som kind of strain. Sometimes the screen will flash and flicker for a few secounds before it shuts down and other times it just shuts down witout any warning.

It seems usually to happen when presing a shortcut which performs something that is related to the harddisk. For instance when I save a unsaved document, open a new document and similar things, though I am not 100% that this is the real patter. Running Disk Firstaid does not reveal anything wrong. I was also wondering if the actual pressing of keys had any bearing, i.e. that the keyboard was defect somehow. In fact, I am leaing towards that now. Sometimes pressing some keys while holding down the Command key will cause restart also.

THe 'book doesn't have a battery installed, since it is broken- But the CD-player and the discette station is inserted. I have tried to reset the Power Management Unit (PMU) and zapped PRAM. I have used it without battery for a long time without problems (though this is my number 2 computer at the moment, I don't use it often.)

I hope that anyone of you might have an idea what the cause might be. I was just planning to sell it ... But now I wonder if I must use it as a server -- if it only can survive _that_.
