Mike, you're going at it the wrong way. They should replace both the Dell & the Gateway with Powerbooks.

And 1) Check Apple's kbase for info. There's some Airport->PC stuff there.
2) Tell your son to call his Gateway tech support and/or Microsoft to ask them for the proper settings. Its their hardware/software that's "plug'n'play" afterall.
