Could the NetGear base be the culprit? I do not want to turn it off and get of the Internet every time I get a call. :-(
Cordless phones and WIFI do not get along. I've had scores of problems that came from either proximity to them or use of them.
Best bet is to move one of them.

ONLY 2.4 GHz wireless phones cause problems with WiFi (as do microwave ovens). this is because they all emit in the same frequency.
900 MHz or 5.8GHz phones do not.

WiFi and most cordless phones operate in the 2.4GHz range. That's why I bought a 5.8GHz Uniden Phone and I have had no problems whatsoever. My Panasonic 2.4 used to kill my Airport connection every couple of minutes.

Sorry to be so late answering all your helpful posts, but I learned the hard way the answer to my problem:
Two days ago there was a BIG fire in a warehouse about 2 miles from my apartment. It was so big that burned the electrical and cable TV wires that feed a large part of my area.
So I was without electrical power for about two hours, and without cable and cable internet for about two days.
And guess what? My phone worked perfectly, without the strange noises. Mind you, is a Panasonic 900 MHz, so there should not be any interference, but there is. My previous phone, a different brand 900MHz never gave me problems.
So yes, there is interference between my NetGear base and my phone.
Live and learn.
:-)
Best regards.
