I installed the MK4026-GAX and partitioned it using a full-retail install disk of OS 10.3, but when I went to install the OS I could not. The screen which shows available volumes had all three volumes "prohibited" and showed a message "cannot install OS because your computer cannot start up from this volume."
I immediately concluded that the drive would not work, so I exchanged it for a Hitachi 5K80 (same 40GB capacity and 5400rpm as the Toshiba). Alas, when I tried to install the OS again (same partitions, same install CD), I got the same error message!
I decided to try instead a DVD (same OS) from a PowerMac G4, and the DVD did not give the error message. However, instead of proceeding to install from the DVD I switched back to the retail CD that had refused to install. This time it worked!
Does anyone have a good theory as to why the OS would not install the first time, but did install after the CD was removed and re-inserted?

p. s. Of course, now I don't know whether the Toshiba would have worked had I tried the same procedure.
