This is new to me, I always assumed that the LCDs should be put to sleep as often as possible in order *not* to accelerate degradation of the illumination lamp. Could you elaborate some more?

Yes, it should be allowed to sleep since the cold-cathode tubes used for backlighting have a finite lifetime.
