I had the same problem when I upgraded my G4/400 to 10.3. It's a documented problem and the solution is somewhere on the Apple site. It is caused by having an old version of itunes on your HD. Delete any copies of itunes on your drive and try again. It should work.
Good suggestion, but I think that he said he blew the drive away during the install. I would see if there is any non-apple ram in the machine. If there is, remove it and see if that helps any.
