Being the careful computer user that you are, you do have a second admin
account on that computer, right? (If not, boot up with your system disk and
activate root. Then log in as root and create a new account.) Actually, the
instructions for logging in a root will in itself will tell us whether your
problem is local or global.

If logging into your second account (or root) is successful then you know
the problem lies in your account and not the computer as a whole. That will
be good news because there are a number of strategies we can apply to get
back to the business of being a happy Mac user.

But before we talk about that, let's find out if the problem is local (as I
suspect it will be) or global.
