I've never opened an iBook but I've heard many times that only replacing the
hard drive is a tough job, so I would imagine that it is not simple and
definitely not for the faint of heart, but, if you take your time and have
clear instructions, you can probably do it. I would think that, based on the
symptoms you describe, it's probably the AC board. On PowerBook G3 Series,
the AC board was with the sound board, so it was called the AC/Sound board,
but I have no idea if an iBook has a separate board or if it is on the main
logic board...
