I've never opened an iBook but I've heard many times that only replacing the hard drive is a tough job, so I would imagine that it is not simple and definitely not for the faint of heart, but, if you take your time and have clear instructions, you can probably do it. I would think that, based on the symptoms you describe, it's probably the AC board.
