Perhaps I should have specified "from within System Preferences". If you want to give him instructions for screwing around with NetInfo, be my guest ;-)

OS X doesn't force you to use a password. My account is the only one on this iBook, and I can remove my password completely just fine. It's a really, really bad idea, but Apple does give you the choice.

Of course the original poster states that he is new to OS X and sending him
into the terminal is probably not a good idea.
Another option is to create a new user Account with Admin privileges and
then delete the previous account. Also, the previous owner of the laptop
HAD to have set a password on the account....it's probably just set to logon
automatically.
Remember, this is OS X, not OS 9.
