Not only is a dropped laptop forever tainted IMO

My Mac service friend says the same thing.

Although you should be careful, if the logic board has been replaced, and the display is working fine, the worst that is likely to happen is a hard disk or optical drive failure. How long has the machine been operating since it was repaired?

the iBooks are said to have much better reception
than the Powerbooks

Can anyone comment on this ? If so, it's a very valid point FOR ME!!

No, with the current generation of machines the difference is generally insignificant. The first lot of titanium PBs were pretty poor in this respect, but Apple has largely fixed the problem in the aluminium PBs.

Definitely wait for Tiger at this point.

I know no-one knows these things for sure, but what is likely to happen when Tiger is released (and WHEN is that?).

I think 3-6 months.

What will happen to prices of the iBooks ? Specs ?

There will almost certainly be a new generation of iBooks around by then, probably with upgraded graphics cards as current iBooks don't offer full support for CoreImage. PowerBooks do, which is something that you should consider when making your decision. Unless you want to wait months before getting a new computer, you'll have to buy Tiger separately, so this doesn't really enter into the equation.

Twice I have bought a PowerBook (through work) and weeks
afterwards a revision was released. First the TiBook 550 with
DVD, three weeks later, Combo. And then my current AlBook
1GHz Combo, two weeks later, SuperDrive... :o(

PowerBook updates could come within "weeks". iBook updates are a bit further away, but still likely within the same timeframe as Tiger's release.

Cheers,
Ben
