I installed OSX Panther Over Firewire from the eMac to the ibook and still no joy

I booted to OpenFirmware and typed "printenv" at the prompt
and the boot-device shows the correct default for new world machines; hd:,\\:txbi

Anyone with an ibook, if you could please startup with command option O F and type printenv at the prompt it will give you the settings for your machine. Could you please report back with the variable next to boot device so I can confirm this.

So far I found these pages and am reading them. It looks like without original CDs for the ibook (not part of the purchase) nor a working internal CD I am stuck, it looks like this ibook is destined to go back to the owner

I will try that and let you know.

I installed everything mobile via a customized install

Could be, but have you tried to "bless" the new system folder? You just pull
out the Finder, put it on the desktop, then you put it back into the system
folder. Sometimes, it's just what's missing. But maybe something is missing
for the iBook in this OS 9 CD installation...
