Are there any trade offs with having 2x512MB in a PBook 15" 1.5GHz?
as opposed to one 512MB...

Having to buy two DIMMS to upgrade past 1GB.

Hmm, you obviously don't know me very well... ;o)

I was thinking of swapping the RAM about, so I had 2x256 at
work and 2x512 at home, i.e. not cost involved.

I suspect you will be hard pressed to notice the difference between 768 MB and 1G in most daily stuff.

Thath's answered my question, especially as it is at work where I need the RAM...
