Are you sure the AirPort card is firmly seated? When I bought my son's iBook, he would get an error joining our network or would get very poor signal on what appeared to be random. I checked the AirPort card myself but it seemed like it was firmly in place. When we brought the iBook to the Apple store, the technician went on the back and came back a few minutes later to report that the card was not properly in place. They were the ones who put it in the first place but I guess they missed on that one.
