I think somebody already posted a reply to your question a bit earlier today. From the desktop, choose the view menu then Show View Options and there you can choose the icon size and how items are displayed on the desktop. You can choose to keep arranged by name or kind or whatever. Personally, I use Name and my HD icon is always up in the upper right. Try a couple of different things and see what you like best. One thing I like is that you can opt to show information on the items. This is great because it will display free space on my HD or how many items are in a folder. This works in 10.2 and 10.3 (I don't remember if you could do this in 10.1....). It also shows file sizes and such. Also you can use different colors on desktop item by control clicking. Give it a try.
