Anyone mind if I ask an insanely simple question? That I can't figure out and it's making me nuts?

I'd like for when my PB boots up, in the login window to have my users listed but also the "other" window that allows mw to log in as root. for the life of me i can't remember how to do this. i set a master pass for the machine, and went into net info manager and authenticated, but all that shows up in my login window is a list of users.

i'm on 10.3.8

thanks in advance :)

In the accounts pref pane change it from Display Login Window as a List of users to Name and Password.

I'd also reiterate that is is a BAD IDEA.

Running as root in the OS X GUI causes a variety of things to break, since the system operates under the presumption that root is a non-login account, and there's nothing you can do as root in a terminal window that 'sudo -s' doesn't let you do, afaik. (sudo -s gets you a shell as root. very useful command.)

Allowing a root login opens you up somewhat to attack, to no good reason.

I don't advocate it for any unix installation. On our servers root can log in directly on the console, and that's it; those are behind a locked door.

For any other usage you have to connect as a user and then su to root, and if I have my way on our new ones, we'll have to use sudo instead of su, as that's logged and su isn't.

It does mean your user password is the key to root, so it has to be a good strong one....
