I have a question about wireless security. I have a wireless router with cable modem. My next door neighbor has gotten emails with attachments from one of our accounts.

1. we don't have our next door neighbors email address in any of our address books and never even had it.
2. he has been receiving them one each sunday for the past 3 weeks and 4 days in a row back in February.
3. No one in our address book has received any emails to my knowledge

The simplest explanation, and by far most likely, is that some spammer forged your 'From' address onto an e-mail sent to him.

All spam has forged 'From' addresses. All PC viruses in the wild forge the 'From' Addresses.

Tell your neighbor to look at the 'Received' headers buried in the e-mail, they will see that it didn't come from your computer, likely it didn't come from your ISP. There may be several of them.

Here are the ones from your message to the list to me:

Return-Path: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Received: from elixir.Phar macy.Arizona.EDU (elixir.Phar macy.Arizona.EDU [128.196.116.5])
by elixir.Phar macy.Arizona.EDU (8.11.6/8.11.6) with ESMTP id j2N2uvh04007
for <[EMAIL PROTECTED] rmacy.arizona.edu>; Tue, 22 Mar 2005 19:56:58 -0700
Received: from mail.applelinks.com ([157.238.133.142])
by elixir.Pharm acy.Arizona.EDU (MailMonitor for SMTP v1.2.2 ) ;
Tue, 22 Mar 2005 19:56:57 -0700 (MST)

This tells me that my mail agent (IMAP) on Elixir received the mail from the MTA (SMTP) on Elixir (they happen to be on the same computer...in a month or two they're going to be different)

It then goes on to say that Elixir received the mail from mail.applelinks.com (the mail host name of the maclaunch.com domain)

Non list mail will often show the originating ip address, for example your address given by your isp.

These lines are far more difficult to forge, and usually show the true origin of the e-mail

I'll wager that if the neighbor looks at the messages they'll show that this stuff is just spam.
