Sounds like a great reason to find another school. My law school recommends a Dell laptop, but visit any lecture hall and you will see just about everything on the market, including a few iBooks and PowerBooks. My last semester (Spring 04) I sat next to a guy using an old PowerBook 5300ce everyday.
I can see an engineering or computer field requiring PC architecture if the required software is PC only and VPC is too slow, but other than that, its none of their business and would be a real deal breaker for me.
