I've been "trying" unsuccessfully to find out or actually purchase a
Powerlogix 900 G3 upgrade for at least 6 months, maybe longer, and I
always get that the store is not available at this time, and no other
places seem to be carrying it. So if you want an upgrade soon, then
you might abandon hope of getting a Powerlogix upgrade. If I
remember correctly, the store became permanently unavailable right
around the time of some big lawsuit in which Powerlogix is involved,
so perhaps that has something to do with it.
Please post or e-mail me directly if you find anything else out,
because I would really like to get this upgrade.
Good luck,
Nancy

That is actually another reason why I am leaning towards FastMac.
If I
could find a price on a PowerLogix upgrade for the Pismo I would be
more
sure, but the FastMac G4 550 seems to have a higher cache size and
speed.
Of course, with the PowerLogix 900 I wouldn't have to purchase the
iChat
hack for PowerBooks under the 600 mhz mark.
It always depends on what you're planning to use. If you are planning
to use
any application that would benefit (or even require) a G4, then
the choice
is obvious. Otherwise, the faster G3 will deliver more speed.
Also, the
processor speed itself should not always be the only factor to
consider when
buying a processor upgrade. The speed of the cache is also
important. For
instance, Sonnet offers an 1GHz G4 processor upgrade for Beige G3,
B&W G3
and first generation PowerMac G4. However, the system bus in this
upgrade
runs at 66% of the original speed of the B&W and G4 bus, which is
66MHz
instead of 100MHz. The bottom line is that it is not much faster
than the
OWC Mercury Z600 G4 500-600MHz ZIF because of this.
