More likely they ban the use of any non-Winona computers on their
network, but not on their physical campus.
You can credit this to the insecurity of Windows. The only way to
secure a network of Windows computers is to massively lock down all the
Windows machines. Most IT people only know Windows as well (notice I
don't write "Windows-savvy", as most Windows IT people are really not
very savvy about their chosen OS), so they do not allow the OSes they
don't know - OSX and Linux.

Winona State University (a public university here in Minnesota) has a

In other words, public schools are not immune to this behavior.

My Fellow PowerBook-philes,
Dude! Where does your daughter go to school??? Holy cow. Is this
college or high school? America? Europe? Somewhere else?
I hope it is a private school -- we'd be all over a public school
doing this in my state. They'd have so many lawsuits from so many
corners before they even thought of it ... well...
And as for the fascism of Universities ... have not really
experienced that myself. My State's flagship University is not too
shabby on that front. Not so hot at some others, though. Like
having a falling out with its Alumni fund-raising foundation....
Oops.
Sincerely,
Pacer the Loon
P.S. My father is a Professor at one of the larger public Us and he
does quite a bit more than research. Your cousin is lucky. Wait
till he gets picked to be head of a department or some other
admin+teaching+research-or-you-lose-your-tenure position. Ah the
state of Academia! :-)

Actually they allow my daughter to have the incredible opportunity of
purchasing the two year old laptop from the school after she has
already
paid $2000 for a $799 computer at $500 per semester. They she gets a
new one
and the cycle starts over.
They also ban un-approved laptops in the classroom and only their
computers
may be used.
My cousin is a full professor at the main University in my state and
he only
teaches two hours each week, while the rest of his time is spent
doing
research, so that may be where some of the excess cash is being used.

Some even go as far as banning non-approved laptops (often anything
except theirs) for fear of "security issues and viruses"...
