After growing up in the big city, 25 years ago I moved into the
middle of rural Ohio where it was possible to make a local call by
dialing just 4 numbers and until four years ago, the house I bought
was referred to by locals as "The Brinkman Place" who, I might add,
hadn't lived there since the late 1950s. Having moved into the middle
of nowhere, I learned a great number of things that, up to then, I
had no need or desire to know. For example: A thunderstorm 25 miles
away can cause a surge in the phone lines which every phone in the
county will survive but will kill a $300 modem that the insurance
company won't pay for. (This was 83-84.) Another thing I learned the
hard way (and amazingly enough even today too many people are unaware
of) is that all surge protectors wear out and should be replaced
frequently.
