As shipped by Apple, the iBook only supports mirroring, that is, showing the same thing on two monitors. This is Apple's position on what is supported.

There is a hack you can do, however, shown here: <http:// www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/supportlist_e.html> along with a link to software to do it for you.

Since your friend isn't technically oriented, I'd certainly confirm (via the forums on that web site) that her particular model is/is not known to work with it.
