I have a Apple PowerBook G3 "Pismo". It has been upgraded with a
PowerLogix BlueChip G3 900MHz CPU and 1Gb RAM.

When powered on, the system works fine and I don't have any issues
with it, however, over the last few weeks it has developed a problem
when being powered off.

When powering it back on, I can hear the hard disk spin up, but the
screen stays black and I don't get the Macintosh "chimes". I have to
pull the power and then try again. Occasionally will get four high
pitch beeps coming from the speakers - I presume this is some sort of
debug code. Eventually the system will power on and boot an the whole
thing is fine.

The main battery is totally shot, and I think the PRAM battery might
be gone because the time is wrong when I start up - but this gets
corrected straight away via NTP.

Can anyone suggest what the problem could be? Do you think replacing
the PRAM battery will fix this?

Replacing the PRAM battery is an easy and relatively inexpensive procedure,
so there's probably little reason not to try it.

The four beeps indicates a boot ROM problem; see this reference:
  <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=58183>

If the PRAM battery doesn't fix it, you'll probably need to contact PowerLogix.

Hope this helps,
