I've had a Kensington cable for 4 years and have had no problems (I don't know that anyone has ever tried to tamper with it). It has a cylinder lock that's superficially like the one on my old Kryptonite bicycle lock that was discovered to be openable with a ballpoint pen. I don't know whether the cable lock has the same vulnerability.

Bear in mind that laptaps are frequently stolen from vehicles. It's very easy to smash a window and grab.
