Obviously the first thing I need is the DVD burner. Probably will go
with the internal. But I was wondering if I had enough horsepower to
accomplish this. Anybody out there burning DVDs on a Pismo? What
upgrades would help the most? G3 900 or G4 500? More RAM? Faster hard
drive speed?
I added a +/- two-layer CD/DVD drive compatible with 10.3 and 10.4
(Pioneer
DVR-K05) to my Lombard and Pismo.
All CD operations are OK.
DVD playing is OK.
I have never successfully created a DVD, in toto, but I have
created partial
DVDs.
The problem might be that your DVD burner is too recent, too
powerful, etc. I had an internal DVD on my Pismo G3/500 back in the
day and it worked okay. IIRC it was a Panasonic UJ-811B and burnt DVD-
R at 2x, so not too fast. But it certainly worked, as I was able to
burn movies with Toast 5, after ripping them with DVD Backup (IIRC)
and DVD2oneX. Took about 20-25 minutes to burn the movie.
The nice thing about the 811B was that its bezel fit the original
Pismo DVD (also Panasonic Matsushita) perfectly. DVD playing was fine
and CD burning too. I never did any data backups to DVD though.
I think a G4 processor upgrade would be helpful, though it's getting
less and less cost effective nowadays as prices on new G4 iBooks drop
and on used G4 powerbooks tumble.
I loved the black of the Pismo and its solid feel, not to mention of
course its easy upgradeability. Loved the expansion bay slots! And so
easy to open up.
If that company that made those "macskinz" (IIRC) was still selling
them I'd love to try a new G4 iBook and slap a black "coating" over
it; not only protective, but also harking back to the mythical Pismo.
Not too crazy about white. So let's hope the new black iPod Nano
(outselling the white one about 8 to 1, I heard) is a sign of blacker
things to come from Apple in the portable computer market too. I'd
love a powerbook inside that black 13.3" widescreen Sony Vaio!
