Hi all just been sent some discs of my family at the other end of the country and they have been saved in avi video files My system is a pismo with 768 ram 500 cpu 30gb hdd and a combo drive cdrw/dvd running the latest version of X Tiger and I have quicktime 7 pro loaded but it cannot read the files it says i need a 3rd party software but which one do i need any help will be great

two things to try:

1) get the DIVX codec <http://www.divx.com/divx/mac/>, except it doesn't work with Tiger and QT 7. (they say they're working with Apple on getting it working)

2) get MS Windows Media Player X <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/ otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=windowsmedia>

That will work with some AVI files.

The problem is that AVI, like MOV, is a 'container' for a variety of codecs, not all available for Macs.

I've found that the old Classic QT movie player plays some AVI's natively that don't in OS X.
