IIRC, Disk Utility won't let you run the repair function on the disk
that you're booted from.  You'll need to boot from the OS install
CD-ROM, and then try to run Disk Utility, and the repair button should
be available.

I've never actually had to run the repair function myself, but I'm
pretty sure that's the case.  Of course, if I'm mistaken, I'm sure
someone will correct me.
