setting 30GB as slave (it had been master) no joy
40GB was acble select: setting as master or slave doesn't help (in
master mode, LED is amber. All other times it's green)

• resetting PRAM no joy
• old FW enclosure got its power via a cable from a USB port on the
mac to a mini-USB port on the enclosure. (I have tried swapping those
too - no joy)
• new enclosure is bus-powered enough to spin up on the Pismo and to
both spin up and mount on other macs. It did come with an external
power supply - but that doesn't help it mount on the Pismo.
Someone else suggested backing up my data and then trying on of the
drives inside the Pismo. I won't have time to try that until next
week but will let you know how I get on.
