Google for GIMP tutorials...it is a complex program, written by geeks for geeks.

There's a version that's set up more like Photoshop for menu layout and such <http://tinyurl.com/7zjlw> This is the whole app, precompiled for OS X 10.3 and 10.4.

There's also some books, Sams has a "Teach yourself the GIMP in 24 Hours".
