You should know what model is your G4 (is it Gigabit Ethernet, Digital Audio
or earlier models). Every time Apple brings new line of G4's they deliver
modified system CD with new "Mac OS ROM" file which support new hardwer. You
can always use system CD which came with newer G4 on your older G4 but you
can't use older system CD with newer G4. For example you can't use System CD
OS 9.04 which came with G4 Gigabit Ethernet on newer G4 Digital Audio
machine, but System CD OS 9.1 which came with G4 Digital Audio can be used
on older G4 Gigabit Ethernet and other models like Cube and even PowerMac
8100. So you should try to get the newest version of MacOS like 9.1.
