Hi !
I�m owning a G3/300 b&w since more than 2 years and I`m still very
enthusiastic about this machine. I`ve seen some new G3`s with more
Mhz, but for the purposes I need (DTP,Webdesign) the 300 are really
more than enough.
Comparing with the newer machines the b&w has some advantages (if you
need the features) that you have to evaluate personally :
- it has an ADB port, that means every ADB device (second keyboard,
old track pads, and so on) works directly on the machine. If you have
some that are important for you or you can get used them for free
this may be important.
- it`s sooooo easy to expand ! I personally have 640MB RAM, 2 IDE
drives (6+40G), a USB card with 2 additional USB ports, a MPDD video
card and a Grappler FastSCSI card running in the box. So the system
has grown with my demands, without having to move to the next
computer. I`m still so satisfied that I don`t intend to move to the
"next level" (>G4) - I don`t see any personal advantages that I
really need in these machines for me.
- I`ve the version with an internal ZIP drive - that`s very practical
for data transfer with my customers.
Any disadvantages ? OK, I regret that I have to say it, but there are some :
- Currently I`ve a System OS X 10.0.4 on my b&w installed beside the
OS 9.1. This version of OS X runs slow on the 300Mhz machine. Too
slow for me to work with it fluently (my personal experience). So I`m
still with the 9.1, hoping that Apple will be able to optimize the
Finder in OS X with version 10.1 ...
- it`s fans are loud comparing to the new iMacs (>333Mhz) or a Cube.
So my conclusion is : go and get it !!! It`s worth the money - and
welcome to the Yosemite-Club ;-)
