If you have this option at a reasonable price, it is a good choice. When I first got my cable modem (11/10/98, I even remember the date!), Cablevision/Optimum Online here in NY gave you the option of renting the modem for $5 a month (an old style Terayon). I did that and am very glad I did. A few months later, when they relized how much money they were losing renting modems, the only option was to buy; $300-$150 rebate, but you had to sign a two year contract. Shortly after, they kept hounding me to buy a modem ($150 sans contract this time), but I refused, still paying the $29.95 + $5 a month rental charge. A couple of months after that, they gave me a brand new 3Com "sharkfin" DOCSIS modem, as they had changed to the new protocol, and no longer supported the old one the Terayon used. If Road Runner supports the DOCSIS protocol, which is pretty universal these days, any DOCSIS-compliant modem will work, and the 3Coms look really cool...
