If you have this option at a reasonable price, it is a
good choice. When I first got my cable modem
(11/10/98, I even remember the date!),
Cablevision/Optimum Online here in NY gave you the
option of renting the modem for $5 a month (an old
style Terayon). I did that and am very glad I did. A
few months later, when they relized how much money
they were losing renting modems, the only option was
to buy; $300-$150 rebate, but you had to sign a two
year contract.

Shortly after, they kept hounding me to buy a modem
($150 sans contract this time), but I refused, still
paying the $29.95 + $5 a month rental charge.

A couple of months after that, they gave me a brand
new 3Com "sharkfin" DOCSIS modem, as they had changed
to the new protocol, and no longer supported the old
one the Terayon used. Pretty good for $5 a month!

If Road Runner supports the DOCSIS protocol, which is
pretty universal these days, any DOCSIS-compliant
modem will work, and the 3Coms look really cool...
