I still think that deleting the Multiple Users items in the System Preferences
folder will fix this. Have you tried that?

I think Melinda's problem is of a different sort. I think because 8 dots show
up in the password window, she thinks the password is reverting or changing to
some unknown password. It does that no matter how many letter/numbers (up to 8)
that you input as your password.
