I recently purchased a beige G3 and would like to upgrade to a 400 mhz G3
processor for generally quicker action (and because it would cost <$100 US,
used). In looking at sales on ebay I saw where there are problems reported
w/ some 300mhz+ ZIF upgrades on Beige g3. I would guess this has been
discussed before.
One seller said older models bg3's (revision 1) with the version 1 rom dimm
would need to upgrade to a newer ROM dimm (he was also selling these), and
might also have to upgrade the voltage regulator, as I recall.
I looked closely at the chip and System Profiler but cant tell which
revision G3 or ROM DIMM I have. From the label on the back of the case I
know it was originally a 233 mhz and I know that these were also made in a
faster speed (266?) so I suspect it's an older one. The chip's labeled:
Apple 1997 820-0961-A.
Will someone shed more light on this, confirm or deny?
I've also heard about heat being an issue with these faster processors on
these and saw a suggestion of putting thermal paste between the heat sink
and processor for better heat conduction- good idea?
Thanks NickUtah

Beige desktop G3 233 with 300 mhz ZIF card, machine ID 510 in profiler.
4 gb Western Digital HD
OS 9.1
256 mg ram, 6mb video RAM
Matshita CD ROM drive
It has a large card in the "PERCH" slot with the mic and speaker ports
coming out of it. There are some empty slots in this card.
