Im having a strange problem that Id LOVE some help with. I updated our workhorse Blue and White G3/350 from OS 9.1 to OS 10.1.5/9.2.2 yesterday, and have consequently lost almost all network abilities to and from the machine. It is currently hooked into an 8 port 10baseT ethernet hub, which is hooked to a cable modem rented from AT&T.
At 9 AM yesterday, running OS 9.1, it was fully capable of accessing both the LAN and the internet. No cables were pulled or damaged between the initial install and the beginning of troubleshooting. Here are the steps: 1. Clean installed OS 9.1 2. Installed 9.2.1 update 3. Installed 9.2.2 update 4. rebooted into 9.2.2 5. inserted Mac OS X CD (rev 10.1.2), clicked Install Mac OS X button, rebooted machine from OS X CD 6. Installed Mac OS X 10.1.2 7. upon startup in 10.1.2, Software Update ran and found a plethora of updates to install (Mac OS 10.1.5 combined update, Applescript 1.8.3, DVD Player, etc.). I selected the appropriate updates, and clicked Install. 8. After approximately 5 MB download, the machine lost its connection and the install stalled. 9. I confirmed that the TCP/IP settings were correct for our ISP (attbi.com), and were identical to the previous settings in OS 9.1. They were. 10. Checked network connectivity. Appletalk and file sharing were both enabled. The machine failed to connect to (in or out) a Powerbook G4 running OS 10.1.5. The machine would, however, connect TO an iBook on the network which was running OS 9.1, but would not accept connections FROM that machine. 11. Downloaded the updates it had asked for on a different machine, burned them to CD, and installed them. Brought machine up to 10.1.5. No difference in connectivity. 12. Played with settings in the Network preference panel. By changing small details in the DHCP ID blank (making up bogus ids) and clicking Apply Now, it was possible to refresh the internet connection for approximately 5 MB of throughput. This continues to be possible. The machine will refresh, re-establish the same IP, and then work. The connection will taper off and stall within a short time, and the IP address as reported by both the Network pref panel and the Network Utility stays the same (a real IP: 24.225.132.64 NOT a 169.254.1.194 (dead) IP). 13. Began troubleshooting software: rebooted into OS 9.2.2, tried internet and LAN functions. Appletalk worked fine (could connect to the machine and from the machine), but internet functionality was identical short bursts, then death. 14. Rebooted into old/original 9.1. Same problems. 15. Began troubleshooting hardware: tried different computer with the same network cable: worked fine. Hooked cable modem directly to the B&W G3: no results dropped connection. Took all other computers off the network: still no connection. 16. Both the iBook AND the Powerbook G4 are buzzing along happily, sharing the cable connection through the same hub, regardless of which network cable they are plugged in to. Neither of these machines can connect TO the B&W G3, but B&W G3 can connect to the iBook (OS 9.1). It cannot connect to the Powerbook G4 (OS 10.1.5). I have since deleted ALL the updates and OSs that I installed, and clean installed 9.1, 9.2.1, 9.2.2, OS 10.1.2, and OS 10.1.5 AGAIN. Same problems. This seems like a hardware issue to me that I somehow fried the ethernet card on the computer, but I know NOTHING about troubleshooting networks. I just dont understand why it will connect intermittently: it works like crazy for a minute or so, then dies. I fiddle with the software settings, it takes off again, then dies. Does this sound like a hardware issue to those of you with more expertise in this area? If this is the case, is it a replaceable part? How much does it cost? Is it user-replaceable? Can I purchase a network card to install in an empty slot in the machine? I found a Siemens 10/100 PCI card for $5 at Circuit City - will that work?
