Try checking the "About this computer" in the Apple menu the next time,
you'll probably find that your on the edge of your memory.

When I've been running my Beige (MT 300, 384 mb ram, 9.1, VM off) on the
edge all day long it displays the same behaviour. AFAIK, it's quite normal.

Some apps seem to get it there faster than others, but I can't remember
which right now.
