i always encourage people to experiment and play with their machines. 
it certainly won't cause any permanent problems, and sometimes
prevailing wisdom is wrong, and sometimes it depends on just which rom
version you have.  i'm honestly not familiar with that machine and
haven't played with x yet.  i know on the graphite g4's the second bus
is slower, but still bootable off of hard drive or cd drive (or dvd-r). 
other than that, xlr8yourmac.com generally has excellent information.
