The IDE/ATA circuitry is built into the motherboard but I don't think it
relies on the CPU to do its dirty work -- the only thing about on-board
IDE/ATA is that it runs at 33 (MHz?, KHz? _Hz?) compared to 66, 100 or 133
for a PCI card. Fast cheap storage will be even faster if you install a
faster PCI card.
