Well, after being a PC ownerfor a little over a decade, I finally decided to
return to my Mac roots (my first comp ever was a Mac LC =) ). So, I went and
ordered a new G4 off of Apple's online store (mainy because I could get it
at edu. discount and got a loan from Apple to pay for it as well... Well
that and the fact that the nearest apple store is a little over 700 miles
away lol).
I used the 1GHz DP model as a baseline and upped the RAM to 1 gig, the HD to
120 gigs, and dropped a Geforce 4 Ti in it. Also picked up the 17" LCD
Studio Display, an Adobe academic bundle, and Office.X (I need it, trust me,
otherwise I wouldn't have gotten any Microsoft stuff at all), and a set of
Logitech Z-560 4.1 speakers. Got a confirmation e-mail, estimated shipping
time 1-3 days for system, 1-2 for display, and 3-5 for everything else, paid
the extra for 2-day shipping with FedEx ('cause ground shipping here can
take 2 weeks lol). All is looking well.
Fast forward to today, 4 days after I ordered it. I now have everything in
my hands as of 3! days ago... Except my comp. "Fine," I figured, everything
else shipped instantly, the comp is a little slower, probably from everyone
changing old unfilled G4 orders over to the new systems. Well, I called
Apple, just to make sure that things were proceeding as planned, because I
need the system by Wednesday, when I go off to college. Guess what? adding
that extra stick of ram upped my ship time to 2-3weeks! I'm a little miffed
right now to say the least, I have talked to Apple 3 or 4 times since
ordering about various issues. I called just yesterday to ask when my comp
would be shipping, the rep said within 24 hours. Great! Got up this morning,
saw it hadn't been shipped, so I called and that's when the guy told me 2-3
weeks. =( Apparently, they are having RAM shortages of all things (seems odd
to me, since RAM is about the single most plentiful computer component you
can find, and they are only using standard PC2700 SDRAM anyways, of which
there is plenty on the market). So, just a word of advice to everyone: If
you are going to get a system from Apple directly, either buy at a resale
outlet, or order the standard config and upgrade it yourself... Just an FYI
too: Adding the 120 gig HD apparently added 4-5 days to the ship time, and
adding the Geforce would also up the ship time to 2-3 (well, 3-4 since I
have already been waiting almost a week). Not being willing to pay the price
Apple wants for a standalone GF4, I have no choice at this point but to bend
over and take this crappy ship time in any case.

I don't suppose that anyone has any suggestions as to ways I could prod
Apple along into getting it out the door faster? I REALLY need this system
before I start school...

Thanks for listening to my little rant.
