I second the aversion to Sony cameras, which along with other Sony
electronic products have taken a downturn in quality in the last few
years. The Olympus digital camera line on the other hand is wonderful, with
sharp clear accurate colors and amazing detail in the photos. A cheap
($25-35) USB card reader gets the photos into the computer quickly. You put
the camera's little memory chip (called a Smartmedia card) into the slot in
the reader and it pops up on your computer's desktop as another drive, with
all the photos on it; you can move the pictures over to the computer's hard
drive from there. A used Olympus 2020 would be great, or a 3030 or the new
4040, all great cameras with remote control, zoom lenses, and macro
settings for extreme closeups of flowers, bugs, etc. These cameras come
with a USB cable to plug into the computer, but I've never used it and like
the card reader instead. The reader will transfer each photo into the
computer in a matter of seconds.

I used an Olympus 3030 to take pictures of some of my oil paintings to put
them up on my art website at http://www.nmia.com/~jaybird/, and you can
take a look there if you want to see examples of what these cameras can do.
And those are only low-resolution pictures for the web. You should see 8 X
10 prints out of an inkjet printer such as an Epson 1280--they are
stunning! They put film cameras to shame. A $50 128-meg Smartmedia card
will hold 160 photos suitable for sharp 8 X 10's, or more if you lower the
resolution setting. Never buy film again! I predict that you will greatly
enjoy the world of digital photography. I have a closetful of 35mm and
medium-format cameras that I haven't used since I bought the digital
cameras.
