i didn't think the processor ran at all in sleep, it really can't or it
would push them over the 5 w limit for "energy star" compliance, though
it does have to get rid of the remaining heat when the processor shuts
down. i don't think the ram is even refreshed, i think it's just
mirrored onto the hard drive and reloaded when you wake it up. part of
why the heatsink is so big i think is because of the dual processor
option, i think apple settled on one heatsink for single or dual
processors just to make live simpler for them, but i could certainly be
wrong, it's a guess. i think that when the machine "sleeps" there is
just a little power supplied to some pci cards and that the silly light
probably draws most of the power in sleep. also, given that when the
cover is closed the heatsink fins are horizontal rather than vertical it
could never keep the processor cool without the fan, and the fan would
use allot less power than the processor so i'm really pretty sure the
processor is off when the machine sleeps, i'm certain that it just saves
an image of the ram to the hard drive and then reloads that image and
restarts the processor when you wake it up, i don't think the cpu is
"throttled" like some processors are in some laptops.
