never take anything you read in the press at face value, even in the
nyt, they've certainly been wrong before.  i worked at a high tech
company for a while, 2 different newspapers did articles about the
company, the mistakes both of them made were pretty sad, and some of
them were pretty simple things like confusing the chief scientist with
the ceo (one look at their photo's and most people would know which was
which).  the sad truth is that "news" reporting, even in print media and
magazines where there is less time pressure, is rather sad these days. 
if there were any truth to the idea, i'd expect to also see it in other
periodicals.  very, very few of the mistakes are ever corrected or
retracted, if they were papers would be getting allot thicker.....
